Taveuni Island and the island of Vanua Levu are located in the north of the Fiji Islands. They are two of the over three hundred island in the Fiji group scattered throughout the South Pacific Ocean. The Fiji Islands are south of the Hawaiian Islands, north of New Zealand and Australia.
The Fiji weather is sunny and warm year round which makes Taveuni Island and North Fiji an ideal spot for South Pacific vacations. International Air Flights to Fiji
If traveling from the U.S.A. or Europe there are direct flights from Los Angeles to the Fiji Island group. There are also direct flights from Japan, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Fiji's International airport is located at Nadi on the main island of Viti Levu, airport code NAD.
Air Flights to Taveuni and Vanua Levu
Two Fiji airlines, Sun Air (formerly Sunflower Airlines, purchased recently by Air Pacific) and Air Fiji, fly to Taveuni Island and Vanua Levu from Nadi's International airport. The flight takes 90 minutes. There are six to seven flights daily. There are also direct flights from Suva, the capitol of Fiji, which is a 60 min. flight.
The domestic Fiji flights have a weight limit of 30 lbs or 15 kgs. Overweight will be allowed at an extra charge by the airline. If you are on a long trip and carrying excess baggage, you may find it convenient to store it at the airport in Nadi.
Transfer to your Resort or Hotel on Taveuni
Resort guests are met by resort staff and driven either to their resort, which can be as little as a 2 min. drive, or to a beach on the Taveuni's north coast where a boat waits to speed guests to the outer islands of Qamea or Matangi.
The drive to the resort or beach is along a scenic road covered by a canopy of tall graceful trees and tree ferns.
Fiji Visas, Fiji Entry Requirements & Fiji Departure Tax
You will need a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the date of your Fiji Travel. NO immunizations or visas are required from most foreign countries.
Fiji Visas
Visas are granted on arrival for a stay of 30 days for citizens of Commonwealth countries and nationals of: Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, Columbia, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Lesotho, Luxembourg, Mauritius, Mexico, Nauru, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, Tunisia, Turkey, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, W. Samoa.
Pre-arranged visas are required for nationals of other countries.
Fijian departure tax
Visitors to Fiji are required to pay $30.00 departure tax in Fijian currency following check-in. Children under 12 are exempted.
Fiji Customs Allowances
Visitors to Fiji are entitled to the following DUTY and VAT free concessions:
- Dutiable goods accompanying passengers (other than alcohol and tobacco products ) not exceeding $F400 in value
- Personal Effects which are owned by passengers and are not intended as gifts or for sale.
Each passenger of 17 years or more may also bring the following goods into Fiji, duty and VAT free, provided they are accompanied and are not for sale:
- Cigarettes, not exceeding 250 sticks or
- Cigars, not exceeding 250grams net weight or
- Tobacco not exceeding 250grams net weight or
- Any combination of (1) to (3) above, provided the total net weight does not exceed 250grams
- Spirituous Liquors not exceeding 2.25 litres or
- Wines, not exceeding 4.5 litres or
- Beer, not exceeding 4.5 litres or
- Any combination of the goods in paragrah (5) to (7) above, provided that the combination does not exceed the equivalent quantity under any one paragraph:
- Other dutiable goods, not exceeding F$400.00 in value.
Fiji Medical
Bring any special medicines you may need with you. There is a small hospital on Taveuni island which has "basic" medications.
Fiji is free from malaria, yellow fever and major tropical diseases that are endemic to most tropical countries. Yellow fever and cholera vaccinations are required only for those arriving from infected areas.
Hospitals are located in the major centres and there are health centres in rural areas. Hotels and resorts have a qualified nurse on the premises and a doctor on call. Some travelers feel better purchasing holiday insurance when they are making their reservations.
Fiji Weather
The weather in Fiji is an ideal south sea tropical climate. Maximum summer termperatures average 30C (86F) and the mean minimum is 23C (73F). The winter average high temperature is 26C (79F) and the mean low is 20C (60F).
Fiji Currency
The Fijian dollar is the basic unit of currency, available in denominations of $2, $5, $10, $20, $50. Coins: 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and $1. There is no limit to the amount of money to be brought in. Visitors are allowed to take out currency up to the amount imported.
There is a 24 hour bank immediately outside the arrival lounge at Fiji's international airport. ATM's are located in baggage claim and outside in front of the bank. A small amount of Fijian currency is useful.
Most resorts accept VISA and MASTERCARD or Traveler's checks and US currency for boutique or bar purchases.
What to Pack for Travel in Fiji
Informality and comfort prevail. So, bring casual tropical clothing. T-shirts and shorts are fine for daytime. Night time attire is your choice. For a barefoot starlight dinner at most resorts, a jacket and tie are not necessary.
Please bring sturdy walking sand shoes (sneakers or running shoes) for rain forest walking. A pair of plastic sandals or reef walkers would also be useful. Pack bathing suits, hat and sunscreen lotion and one warm sweatshirt or jacket. Hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, beach towels and robes are supplied by most luxury resorts. Check with your accommodation for amenities.
Insects and Animals in the Fiji Islands
Nothing on the land is poisonous or dangerous. Fiji is a tropical environment
so there are the occasional bugs, spiders or toads.
